Sale of Angling Licenses by Clubs/Provinces

Dear SAUFF Members

SAUFF have, together with the South African Sport Anglers and Casting Confederation (SASACC), been working with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to identify initiatives that would benefit both the angler / spearfisher and the government.

We have a meeting with the DAFF Revenue Department next week where we will be discussing the sale of licenses exclusively through SASACC’s recognized fishing facets like SAUFF.

It is worth mentioning that the SA Post Office currently earns in the region of R 9Mil per year for what it currently does as regards the sale of recreational fishing licenses and we believe that if this money was channeled through the organised recreational fishing structure it would be far better spent.

Below are some points I would like you to think about and perhaps add to before replying with your suggestion and feedback.

• SASACC must have exclusivity.
• ONE standard license for recreational saltwater angling sports.
• A two-tier system where a considerable discount is given to members of clubs, which effectively pays for that individuals membership. Something like a R100 license costs R200 if you are not a member of a club. Thereby increasing club memberships and the sports recognised membership.
• The policing of club members becomes the responsibility of the Clubs, Provincial Unions, SAUFF, SAFSSA and ultimately SASACC which will be duly appointed.
• The facets and clubs are permitted to make an agreed upon profit from the sale of licenses.

I will appreciate any feedback, comments or suggestions emailed to me before the end of this Saturday the 4th of September.

Kind regards

Richard Bruno
SAUFF

2010 Nationals

A very successful Nationals has been completed this year. Many thanks to Ian Ewing and his team from KZN for all their hard work. Here is a day by day blow:

Monday - Day 1 – SA Individual Championships

Dived off the Bluff in Area 2.

Conditions were not good with visibility ranging from 1 to 4 meters and a moderate swell, but no wind. Even in these conditions, a large number of fish were shot. Biggest was a 12Kg cuda from Andrew Henwood.

Tuesday - Day 2 – SA Individual Championships

Dived in Area 3 off the Umhlodti River Mouth. There was only one very small piece of reef where the water was clean, about the size of a rugby field. The sea was calm with a moderate SW later. With about 60 divers in this small area, there were some interesting times for both divers and bakkies. Visibility started around 6 meters and deteriorated to less than one meter. Those who stayed on the River Mouth reef got the best of the conditions and the fish moved with the clean water and the thermocline southwards. The compo was shortened to 4 hours when viz. dropped to 1 meter. Again very good fish were shot including a 27Kg cuda by Daniel Kospic (Croatian and European Champion) which took the Biggest Fish prize.

Thursday - Day 3 – SA Interprovincial Championships

Dived in Area 1 at Warner Beach. A very long ride south. Again, the sea was calm with a light westerly later. Water was cleaner at the Warner’s nets area with about 6 meters visibility and deteriorated to less than a meter in the northern part of the zone. Again very good fish were shot with several teams getting their 30 fish quota.

Friday – Day 4 – SA Interprovincial Championships

Dived in Area 2 off the Bluff. Even though this area had already been dived, teams bagged some excellent catches. Sea was quite rough, with a moderate to strong south westerly blowing at the start, with visibility up to 15 meters. Current was moderate South/North.

After 4 hard days diving, Ryan Burmeister was declared the South African Individual Champion and the KZN Midlands Team consisting of Ryan, Jaco Blignaut and Brod Wittaker, the winners of the SA Interprovincial Championship.

Every day the Emzemelo Wildlife (Natal Parks Board) in the form of James Wood and his team were at the weigh-in’s and SAUFF would like to thank them for their co-operation and efforts on our behalf.

Marine and beach clean-up

The DUC Scuba section, Tracey-Lee Featherstone, is arranging groups of scuba divers to support the Marine and Beach Clean-up and has requested spearo's to also support the cause. I think the idea is positive and an excellent awareness campaign which should be supported by free divers.

The clean-up is on Saturday the 18th of September but we require the names by next week Tuesday the 7th of September. Please support the cause and forward your names to me, if you have a boat get your crew to join in collecting waste and debris on the day.

Tracey is looking for sponsors for the clean-up so if you have a company and interested, please give me a call.

Regards,
Shane.

SA Teams versus Croatia

On Friday night, three South African teams were selected to compete against Croatia. They were:

SA ‘A’ Team - Angelo Spada (Capt.), Brent Borstlap, Jaco Blignaut

SA ‘B’ Team - Ryan Burmeister (Capt.), Brod Wittaker, Craig Heslop

SA ‘C’ Team - Carl Werner (Capt.), Garret Staats, Andrew Henwood

At the last minute, Jaco withdrew and thus Craig went up to the ‘A’ Team, Andrew went to the ‘B’ Team and Ian Ewing was added to the ‘C” Team.

The Croatians fielded two teams.

Again, the Bluff was chosen and the day started in calm weather with very good visibility. About 9.30, the North Easter started up and by 12 it was blowing hard. Again a moderate South/North current. Compo was again shortened to 5 hours. Top teams bagged 30 weighers with several good grunter and a very big stumpnose and a false Englishman.

This “Test Match” was won by the Croatian ‘A’ team by 3 points.
